The Aboriginal name for Lane Cove river was Turrumburra and the LCRK club award for the fastest paddler is known as the Turrumburra trophy. We would like to acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we are meeting, the Cammeraygal People, and acknowledge the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who now reside in this area. We extend that respect to Elders – past and present – and future cultural knowledge holders.

As can be seen from the map, the Lane Cove River has lots of twists and turns, and sections which are navigable at high but not low tide. Last time, course length was 'just right' - due to it being set with both separation buoys and ALSO with Hazard buoys which are part of the course. The Hazard Buoys are black and white striped - signifying no corner cutting, do not go shoreside!

PNSW Marathon Series #6 - Lane Cove - Sun 27 Mar 2022
PNSW Marathon Series #3 - Lane Cove - Sun 27 Mar 2022
This round is a designated ‘Doubles Round’ with bonus points for doubles per the rules (extracts below):
65. Bonus Club Points – Doubles Round If any event is designated as a ‘Doubles Round’, paddlers who complete the event in any double craft will earn 50 Club Points per boat for their club – in addition to any normal placing points earned towards the Brian Norman Club Trophy.
82. One race in the marathon series will be designated as a ‘Doubles Round’ and will be conducted in regular Divisional racing format.
83. Points from the Doubles Round will be awarded as follows:
a. Paddlers who normally race in single boats will also earn 46 points towards their individual Division pointscore in their regular single Division (which can count as one of the best 7 races).
b. Regular double combinations will be eligible for Division points in the normal manner. \\
c. Worked example: A new combination of paddlers (who normally race as single paddler) enter the Doubles Round, and win their race. They will each earn 46 points towards their regular single Division pointscore and they will earn 100 club points (50 for the win and 50 bonus points for competing).

PNSW Marathon Series #6 - Lane Cove - Sun 23 May 2021
Welcome to Lane Cove River Kayakers hosting of Round 6 in the 2021 PNSW Marathon Series. Many paddlers would recall the fun we had at the 2019 LCRK Doubles Round with 86 doubles, 53 singles and 225 paddlers! Well it’s on again - this year incorporating the State Doubles Championship. We offer an interesting 10km deepwater course starting upstream in a mangrove lined stretch of the Lane Cove River, opening out to the waterfrontages of Hunters Hill and Linley Point, with distant views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge from the bottom turn.

Racing Format
This is a Divisional Racing round with Divisions 1 – 13 per the normal Marathon Series format we’re used to. Some subtle differences though to accommodate this as a Doubles Round and State Doubles Championships:-
- Regular Doubles combos should enter their regular Division
- New Doubles combos are not required to complete a ranking race. New Doubles combos should enter one Division faster than the fasted ranked paddler (eg if a Div 3 paddler pairs with a Div 4, they should enter Div 2 for this round)
- Entries will be reviewed by the Marathon Committee and ‘Fair Play’ adjustments may be applied
- Distances of 5/10/15/20/25km will be offered. Division 1 will race 25km (self-promote if you wish)
A mandatory portage is included for Division 1. Portage is a mid-river sandbar at Fig Tree Bridge (Burns Bay Rd) on the return from bottom turn (2 x portages for 25km distance). Any exceptions (eg injury) - ‘no advantage’ rules apply.
Points
Marathon Series Individual Points
- Singles paddlers (in a single) will earn points based on finishing position in their Division (50 points for 1st etc).
- Regular doubles combos will similarly earn points based on their finishing position.
- As will New doubles combos…
- Additionally, Regular singles paddlers who paddle a Double will earn a flat 46 points to their regular Division.
Marathon Series Brian Norman Club Trophy Points
- Per usual, Club points will be earned based on the best 2 boat performances per Club in each division.
- In addition, each Double gets 50 Club bonus points (per finishing boat). Paddlers must nominate same Club.
Marathon Series ICF Trophy Points
- Awarded to finishing ICF boats who nominate their boat as ICF.
State Doubles Championship Placings
- Those nominating State Doubles Championship participation with their Webscorer entry will have their result determined by backcount – based on average boat speed for selected distance.
So how’s it work?
- Individuals chasing Marathon Series points are almost certainly going to get the best result by entering a Double in the State Doubles Championship.
- Clubs will be able to significantly advance their Marathon Series standing (Brian Norman Club Trophy) by entering as many Doubles as possible earning Club bonus points for finishing. This applies to both Championship and Non-Championship doubles – no ranking race is required. Bonus points are in addition to normal placing points.
- Singles just wanting to paddle can still enter the Non-Championship classes.
Racing Format (subject to official verification)
State Doubles Championships Races
- ICF K boats with Portage (selection) – 5,10,15,20,25km
- Other boats – no portage – 5,10, 15, 20km
Non Championship Races
- 5,10,15,20km (ie no divisional racing for this round)
Classes will be offered for Male/Female/Mixed and Age – U18, Open, Masters (10yr increments may get a pre-race review if sufficient constituted classes). Refer Webscorer entries for further detail on exact options.
Points
Marathon Series Individual Points
- Each finishing paddler in State Doubles Championship will earn points to their normal Marathon Series Division based on finishing position within their class (50 points for 1st etc).
- All Non-Championship finishers (ie all singles, and non-champ doubles) will earn 46 points to their normal Marathon Series Division.
Marathon Series Brian Norman Club Trophy Points
- Each Double gets 50 Club points (per finishing boat) towards the Club Trophy. Paddlers must nominate same Club.
- Club points will ALSO be earned based on the best 2 boat performances per Club in each class for all Championship and Non-Championship classes.
Marathon Series ICF Trophy Points
- Awarded to finishing boats in the ICF K (selection) category
- 25km course will do 2 x 10km laps, 1 x 5km lap;
- 20km course will do 2 x 10km lap;
- 15km course will do 1 x 10km lap, 1 x 5km lap. etc...

As can be seen from the map, the Lane Cove River has lots of twists and turns, and sections which are navigable at high but not low tide. Last year course length was 'just right' - due to it being set with both separation buoys and ALSO with Hazard buoys which are part of the course. The Hazard Buoys are black and white striped - signifying no corner cutting, do not go shoreside!

We are really excited to tell you that we are still "all systems go" in planning for the 2020 Hawkesbury Canoe Classic. A meeting of the Race Committee held last week agreed that we should continue to make preparations for this year's event to be held on the 24th / 25th October.

Drought, Fire, Flood, Pestilence - LCRK Time Trials persist!
@20 Mar 2020: In the face of the latest challenges posed by COVID19, LCRK is continuing to run weekly Wednesday evening Time Trials while we legally/sensibly can. We have modified TT procedures to provide a 'socially distant' experience which allows Club Members to get some much needed exercise for their head and heart.
The approach is consistent with the guidelines provided by Paddle Australia. Maintaining routines and staying active are both identified as positive ways to cope with the head games. The on-water aspects of marathon paddling are one of the few sports where social distancing is invariably present - and give ideal opportunity for a bit of a weekly chat and relative normality.
Above: Close quarters action in our socially distant TT!
We continue to monitor recommendations of Health Departments and Government mandates and will modify our approach as necessary. Paddlers should of course exclude themselves if they are in quarantine/isolation. Otherwise attend based on their own assessment and appetite for risk.

Pontoon Problem...
An East Coast 'Low' over the weekend of 8-9 Feb 2020 caused the pontoon to pop off one its piles. The 12 Feb TT was cancelled while damage was assessed.
The pontoon has resumed normal horizontal position, the 3 pontoon sections were initially no longer connected at the outer pile - this being remedied for the time being with chain. The arrangement has been satisfactorily weathering the tides since.
Update 11 Feb: Just wrapping up a committee meeting where we have agreed not to run the 12 Feb time trial. The damage to the pontoon from last weekend’s storm is extensive and we are waiting council’s assessment. In the mean time we are looking at what options we have for future time trials and for our marathon series race on 5 April should the pontoon be out of order for a period of time.
Update 14 Feb Council is happy for LCRK to organise contractors and scope out the repairs. Temporary repairs seem to be satisfactory for use, and we're hoping to have a TT as scheduled on Wed 19 Feb with paddlers exercising all due care getting on and off the pontoon. We will confirm via a Mailchimp

The pontoon has resumed normal horizontal position, the 3 pontoon sections were initially no longer connected at the outer pile - this being remedied for the time being with chain. The arrangement has been satisfactorily weathering the tides since.

An East Coast 'Low' over the weekend of 8-9 Feb 2020 caused the pontoon to pop off one its piles. The 12 Feb TT was cancelled while damage was assessed.

TT 28 Nov 2018 is CANCELLED due to weather
If you hadn’t already noticed - the weather today and for tonights TT is looking distinctly unpleasant. We have been monitoring conditions:
- Lane Cove WIND is forecast to pick up to a 50km/h Southerly during the TT (plus gusts)
- The river was flowing around “Murrumbidgee speed” at the pontoon 8am this morning – with much debris evident
- Conditions are uncertain at Fullers Bridge (the MHL water level monitor installed there suggests water level is currently about 300-400mm higher than we’d expect on current tide (fresh flow is pushing into a rising tide).
- It will almost certainly be raining (ie not sprinkling)
After much thought we’ve decided to CANCEL the time trial for tonight. Please travel safely and see you next week instead.
Hawkesbury Canoe Classic 26-27 October 2019

As of May 2019 and the publishing of Start Times:

- Mens doubles 5:15pm
BUT this is subject to change.
Tides
Everyone starts WITH the tide, but the tide turns against you, generally between checkpoints B and C. there is a brief tide against you, through Snackville, then the tide turns with you; (the fast guys at about Checkpoint G and the slower guys between E and F. So somewhere about the big W. The tide is with you then through Wisemans to the finish for the fast ones and slower ones will catch the turn at about Spencer.
You need to try and finish before the tide turns near the finish at about 2:30am. That is a race time of about 10hr 45min for women and 9hr 30 min for men, otherwise you will be battling a very strong tide against you between Spencer and the finish.
So in order to avoid the second tide against you this year, pick a fast boat or a double. Stop at Sackville when the tide is against you. Do not linger at Wisemans when the tide is with you. Landcrew this year the tide at Wisemans is high and going out...

Welcome to Lane Cove River Kayakers hosting of race 4 in the PNSW Marathon Series. Many paddlers would recall the fun we had at the 2018 LCRK Doubles Round with 70 doubles, 75 singles and 215 paddlers! Well it’s on again - this year being run in conjunction with the State Doubles Championship. We offer an interesting 10km deepwater course starting upstream in a mangrove lined stretch of the Lane Cove River, opening out to the waterfrontages of Hunters Hill and Linley Point, with distant views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge from the bottom turn.

- Regular Doubles combos should enter their regular Division - New Doubles combos are not required to complete a ranking race. New Doubles combos should enter one Division faster than the fasted ranked paddler (eg if a Div 3 paddler pairs with a Div 4, they should enter Div 2 for this round) - Entries will be reviewed by the Marathon Committee and ‘Fair Play’ adjustments may be applied - Distances of 5/10/15/20/25km will be offered.
So how’s it work? i. Individuals chasing Marathon Series points are almost certainly going to get the best result by entering a Double in the State Doubles Championship. ii. Clubs will be able to significantly advance their Marathon Series standing (Brian Norman Club Trophy) by entering as many Doubles as possible to get bonus points on finishing. This applies to both Championship and Non-Championship doubles – no ranking race is required. Bonus points are in addition to normal placing points. iii. Singles just wanting to paddle can still enter the Non-Championship classes.

As can be seen from the map, the Lane Cove River has lots of twists and turns, and sections which are navigable at high but not low tide. In prior years the course has been 'too long' then 'too short' and this year we're aiming for 'just right'. To achieve this the course will be set with normal red(pink) separation buoys. And ALSO with Hazard buoys which are part of the course. The Hazard Buoys are black and white striped - signifying no corner cutting, do not go shoreside!

Hawkesbury Canoe Classic 2018 - 27-28 October 2018
Another HCC done and dusted!
Lane Cove has again put up a strong team for the annual Hawkesbury Canoe Classic - 111km overnight down the Hawkesbury from Windsor to Mooney Boat Ramp.
- Results are still being worked through after a couple of unscheduled ferry hold-ups and the race having been foreshortened due to weather (affected those who didn't get to the finish line by ~6am).
- The Hawkesbury Canoe Classic primarily supports the Arrow Bone Marrow Transplant Foundation, and every LCRK entry and the associated fundraising activity helps this great cause.

YUKON RIVER QUEST 2018
The 2018 Yukon River Quest was run and won in late June/early July. A mere 444 Miles (715km) of paddling down the Yukon with lots of paddling and very little sleep. Click on the link at right for a running commentary, trackers, pix etc.
Don't forget to check out Tony's race report - excerpt below - it's a beauty!
I blasted across Lake Laberge feeling great, swapping washride leads with the winning double canoe (above) but bidding them farewell at the start of the river proper at Lower Laberge. I had to stop for toilet breaks, while they could go ‘on the go'. I’d practiced the process on Lane Cove River, (in the cover of darkness) and was pretty comfortable with it.
Just prior though, I filled my recently consumed second water bladder with river water, and popped in the silver nitrate tabs needed half an hour before use, and had a feed of boiled potato. Adding some Torq electrolye for taste, I swapped to this new water supply a while after Bayers Woodyard....

As you can see from the pictures - some put a fair bit of time, energy and soldering irons into it including accompanying soundtracks (who can forget the Dancing Queens in the K4!). A quick trip to the $2 shop is also more than sufficient (or just 'borrow' the lights from your bicycle). Prizes are awarded based on a criteria yet to be decided. One hint - do not light up your front deck - you'll have no idea where you're paddling.

The 5th time trial in May happens to concide with Sydney's VIVID festival which is an opportunity for LCRK to light up the river a little more than we usually do. It will be a standard time trial, always with a bit of creativity on show!

* At our next Time Trial, paddlers are asked to decorate their kayak/person with lights and bling.
* Alongside the VIVID festival, this is a good chance for us to create a bit of a spectacle on the River.
* Any effort is welcome - from glowsticks on your paddle to higher voltage extravaganzas.
* Check out photos from previous years here \\

- Membership renewal can be done from here \\
Some hints and tips. Excessive lighting at the front of the kayak does not make for easy navigation (well not for you anyway). Excessive lighting at the rear of your kayak will discourage washriders. A small 12V battery secured behind your seat can power a Griswold of Christmas lights and LED's. If you want something themed - check out the Vivid Sydney website and maybe get some ideas there?
